Black History Month, Naomi Sims
Naomi Sims, the industry's first black supermodel. This incredible woman made a large impact on the modeling world by breaking barriers for women of color. She possessed all the graceful characteristics proved to be model potential. At the age of 13 she was 5'10. The remarkable height is perfect for the runway. Naomi set off to NYC when she was 18 to study at the fashion institute of technology, there she began to gain interest in fashion modeling. Due to the era of racial discrimination she was turned away from several auditions being told she was too dark to model. Every person that turned her away didn't crush her dreams, she gain more determination. As time went on she made history by being the first black women on the cover of a main stream magazine (Ladies Home Journal, 1968). After that there was no end. She later on became the cover girl of Life and Cosmo, and walked many runways including the legendary Halston. This fierce model accomplished all that many believed wouldn't happen. Along with that she open doors for other minorities to have opportunities to shine through as she did. After retiring in 1973 she went from model to mogul, owning a beauty based business and becoming an author of several books (How to be a Top Model, All About Success for the Black Woman). On August 3, 2009 we lost an significant women due to cancer. Naomi will always be remembered as the bold model mogul who made great change to the modeling industry!!!
